Did you know that you can make Laffy Taffy from coffee creamer? I’d never have believed it either, until I saw and did it myself. If any of you have friends or family who are unlucky enough to be behind a fence somewhere, feel free to share this with them.
I use a whole bag of creamer (which is 12 ounces) to make a batch. Then I add 5 packets of commissary drink mix and two electrolytes, and just 3 spoons of water. This may sound like an absurdly small amount of water, but trust me – if you use much more than that, it will be taffy soup, rather than Laffy Taffy.
I typically use an empty corn chip or tortilla chip bag to mix everything up in. You have to knead it really well, and you can put your weight down on the contents much better than you could in, say, a bowl. But you will want to twist the bottom of the chip bag together, and tie it with a string, to keep the bag from busting open along the bottom of the seam. (and that WILL happen, if you don’t follow my advice!)
If you only use 3 spoons of water, and mix it in a bag, you can make it really hard, almost like Now and Laters! You can try mixing various types of powdered drinks with electrolytes – and even… ahem… kitchen Kool Aid! You’ll always want to use more Kool Aid than electrolytes, though, so it won’t be too “acidy” on your teeth. (Yes, I coined a new word there!)
For people in Texas, try 5 blue or purple commissary drinks with 2 green electrolytes. Or two spoons of red or orange kitchen Kool Aid with 2 electrolytes. I usually slice the top off the bag of creamer rather than opening it, so I can then use the bag to put the taffy in. Just flatten it out (into the shape of the bag), and be prepared for a horde of people bugging you for a piece of it!
I don’t know if that’s how the Laffy Taffy company makes theirs, but it works in my lab. And it’s even sugar-free! So says DannyBoy…
