Happy Birthday To Me!
Since it’s my birthday today (June 4th) , I’m reminded of a few TDCJ traditions… One of them is the “birthday spread”. That’s when a group of your associates all pitch in and cook something, which you then eat together.
As for me, we made Nachos – which consisted of tortilla chips (of course) topped with chili, refried beans, sliced pickles and jalapeños, cheese – and a ranch dressing squirted across the top, to make it look pretty.
We are generally racked up on the weekends, due to short-of-staffageness (another new word I coined!), so we had the foresight to mark the occasion on Friday, just in case. I had quite a few guys come over to the table to wish me a Happy Birthday – and of course, most of them had a sample at the same time.
Since we weren’t racked up on my actual birthday (June 4th), I tried to convince everyone to do it again on Sunday – encore! – but no such luck.
Little things like that are cool (birthday spreads, I mean, not encores) because it’s a “community” thing, and causes people to interact with each other, share, etc – which is never a bad idea, even in prison. So says DannyBoy.
