From my experiences on Write A Prisoner over the years, I’ve gotten used to a phenomenon that I named “The Crazy Inmate Lady”. This is rather like a crazy cat lady – except that, instead of sitting at home with her 27 cats, she sits at home writing to 27 inmates!
Which is fine, if that’s your thing (although cat food is probably cheaper than all those stamps!). It’s just that I find it easier to connect with someone I can engage with on a one-on-one basis, rather than someone who copies a form letter and sends it to 16 different people.
I would probably respond, as it’s my policy to respond to anyone who takes the time to write me. But I probably wouldn’t be checking the mail every day, waiting on a response from them, either. (I wouldn’t have to – I could just wait on some other guy down the run to get his letter!) just kidding
I hope that any of you who write people from Write A Prisoner have nothing but good experiences from there. It really makes a person’s day in here to know that a complete stranger is willing to reach out and offer their friendship to you. At least on that day, they won’t be feeling as if the world has moved on and forgotten them – no matter how long they’ve been in prison. So says DannyBoy.
Write a Prisoner? Why not?
