Lessons from Games

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that you can learn something from anybody, or from just about any situation, if you are willing to. Even if someone is a complete idiot (and there are plenty of those around), at least you can learn what an idiot IS, how to recognize one when you see him (or her!), and most importantly, learn how NOT to be.
The trick is to keep your mind OPEN to learning, and to seek knowledge, wherever you can find it. For example, since we’ve had the tablets, I’ve been manically (or maniac-ly!) playing a game called Let Me Move. It’s a lot like the old game Tetris. It will randomly send you pieces of various shapes and sizes, which you then have to assemble – and each complete row then blows up and vanishes from the screen.
I couldn’t help but realize how similar to life that is. People and events are thrown into contact with you, often quite randomly, and it’s up to you to utilize them (and HARMONIZE them), and steer clear of the ones who are only destructive to you.
Most of our mistakes in life come when we refuse to let go of the pieces we’d actually be better off without. And sometimes we overlook the pieces that will actually help us the most.
At times (in the game) it will deliberately send you a string of HUGE pieces that are more of an obstacle than a help to you, because you can’t possibly use them all – but life does the same thing. Sometimes you simply cannot win, in a given situation. But how well you perform ANYWAY, and the attitude you have while trying (and failing) are the true measure of your character. In fact, the MORE tough times you go through, the better you’ll be prepared to deal with them in the future. And if you’re smart enough, you’ll have left a space aside for just that contingency in life, the way I’ve learned to in the game. The important thing is to THINK, because the better you’re prepared for whatever obstacles are thrown your way, the better you’ll be able to handle them, when they do arrive.
I suppose the moral of the story, if there is one, is that it may SEEM like I’m just wasting time, playing games on my tablet all day… but in reality I can learn from even that, if I put my mind to it. So says DannyBoy.
