I woke up Sunday morning, fully intending to FINALLY take a day off from work – and it’s a good thing, since the entire unit was racked up, anyway. It seems that some idiot on the Walls Unit (which is nearby) decided to climb from a window and escape. (“Pancakes for breakfast AGAIN? I’m outta here!”) And of course all the other units in the vicinity were placed on lockdown while they dealt with it.
As my luck would have it, I had a video visit scheduled with my wife, which was by no means certain now, but I told her that if she’d have the faith of a mustard seed (like I always do!), everything would be fine.
They caught the guy about six hours later, at a Walmart near Corpus Christi. (I didn’t call him an idiot for nothing!) When my wife asked me why an escapee would stop at Walmart, of all places, I answered simply, “EVERYTHING is cheaper at Walmart!” (just kidding)
Now the poor guy will probably be going to Ad Seg – and the rec and commissary restrictions they put him on will be the least of his concerns. He will assuredly pick up some more time for the escape, robbery, etc. But at least he’ll have plenty of time to write a book about it, called “My Six Hours Of Freedom”, or whatever. (It might very well be his LAST six hours of freedom!)
I’m just glad that the idiot didn’t hurt anybody. An innocent bystander shouldn’t be targeted merely for crossing paths with him – and there’s no telling what sort of draconian policies TDCJ would’ve enacted on the rest of us, because of it. He was an idiot, and he’s paying the consequences for his actions, but he was a LONE idiot, with no connection to the rest of us.
Before long, things went back to normal, and my video visit went just fine. We had to settle for corn dogs and burritos for the day, but it didn’t kill us. Life goes on, here on the Wynne Unit, where we have our OWN dumbest criminals to worry about!
It’s not always easy to see how we can make our situations better, I’ll admit. But if we’d just take a second to think, BEFORE we act, we should be able to keep from making things any worse. So says DannyBoy.
