edovo.org

I was playing on my tablet last week (as I usually am, when I’m not at work or asleep), and noticed a new app window that appeared for the first time. I’ve never heard the word “edovo” before, but I take pride in knowing every nook and cranny of my tablet – so I had some investigating to do.
In just a short time, I felt convinced that I’d discovered what is probably THE most important thing on the tablet. Not a hidden stash of porn, alas, but a treasure trove of knowledge that is available to every inmate in Texas, absolutely free.
There are various categories where the inmates can take classes in areas such as academics, jobs, health and recovery, reentry, and spirituality. The academic section itself will keep me busy for quite some time – and some inmates will learn more than they have in their whole lives! (That is, if they can put the games down long enough to focus on it.)
Another cool aspect of it is that you earn certificates for each class that you complete and pass. These are then posted online in your transcript, where family, friends, or whoever else can look at it and see exactly what you’ve been up to lately.
I personally completed four classes within the first few days, just in getting myself acquainted with the app and its contents. My wife looked at their site (edovo.org) and sure enough, my achievements are posted for the world to see.
The app contains classes in just about anything I could care to learn, and they grow more advanced as I complete them. Some of them are even applicable for college credit. I took a mathematics course, another one in persuading others, and a reentry class, where I learned things that will be useful upon my release. I even took a class from a culinary arts school about the history and preparation of coffee and tea, since I make the Major’s coffee every day! =-) I noticed other available classes in every branch of science and mathematics, psychology, history, art, and just about anything else you can think of.
There is even a point system, where you earn points (or stars) for the amount of time you spend participating on the app, and for every class you complete. However, these stars must be related to TDCJ good time, because I can’t see a single thing that they’re useful for. I do have over 380 of them, though – whatever that means!
The tablets changed a lot of things about TDCJ, and the way that inmates spend their time. And this new app is probably the most useful, beneficial thing ON the tablet. So be sure you recommend it to your loved ones – and let them know that you’ll be checking their progress online. That will encourage them, and give them something constructive to do with their time. Who knows – they may even learn something, which is never a bad thing. So says DannyBoy.
