Dannyboy in Exile

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be in prison? I don’t mean the “war stories” about riots and stabbings, or the myriad complaints about our civil rights being violated. I mean the thousand little details that make up our daily life in here, that noone else seems to write about.

My name is Danny , and I am an inmate (though they call us “residents” now, for some reason!) in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. (TDCJ) To make a long story short, I robbed a motel when I was 19 years old. I panicked (the drugs didn’t help), shot the clerk – and I’ve been here ever since. My career as an armed robber didn’t last very long – but (alas) my career as an inmate has lasted much longer.
After spending 30 years in prison, I’ve changed – and grown – in many ways. But who IS the same person at 50 that they were at 19? I try to focus on the positive aspects of my situation, and seek knowledge wherever I can find it. I’m still alive, after all, and there are things I can still accomplish, even from here. I’ve read thousands of books, and realized that I also have a unique voice that other people may be interested in. My writing is a creative outlet for me, and a way to still feel connected to anyone out there who cares to hear what I have to say. I’ve figured out that I can learn from just about any situation, as long as I’m willing to. And I have the audacity to think that some of you may even be able to learn something from me!
Through my posts, I’ll try to enlighten the public about how it really is in prison, on a day-to-day basis. I don’t whine or complain, and I will always be honest with you. I try to stay in a positive state of mind, and I’ll do my best to make you smile, lol, or at least roll your eyes in each of my essays. Hopefully you’ll find them amusing as well as informative.
Thanks for taking the time to read what I have to say. If any of you care to get in touch with me, or have any questions, feel free to contact me.Sincerely, Danny
